ANA Takes Capacity Building Workshop On Copyright To Six Regions

ANA TAKES CAPACITY BUILDING WORKSHOP ON COPYRIGHT TO SIX REGIONS

By ANA Media Team
The Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) has commenced a nationwide capacity-building programme aimed at strengthening authors’ knowledge of copyright protection, reproduction rights, royalties management, collective administration, and practical strategies for safeguarding intellectual property within Nigeria’s literary and creative industries.

The initiative will be implemented across the six geopolitical regions of the country as part of ANA’s commitment to empowering writers and enhancing their professional capacities.

According to the President of the Association of Nigerian Authors, Dr. Usman Oladipo Akanbi, the training programme is designed to provide authors with the knowledge and tools required to protect their creative works, maximize the benefits of copyright ownership, and better understand emerging opportunities in rights administration and royalty management. He noted that the workshop series represents a significant step towards building a more informed and economically empowered community of Nigerian authors.

The first phase of the programme will take place in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Thursday, 18 June and Friday, 19 June 2026.

The venue is Elders Place, No. 17, Abinusawa Street, Off Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) Bus Stop, along Idi Ape, Basorun Road, Ibadan, with activities commencing at 12 noon each day. Participants for the Ibadan workshop will be drawn from ANA chapters in the South-West region as well as Kwara State.

Dr. Akanbi explained that the Ibadan workshop will feature two specialised sessions facilitated by key stakeholders in Nigeria’s copyright ecosystem.

The Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) will lead discussions on copyright protection and intellectual property administration on 18 June 2026, while the Reproduction Rights Society of Nigeria (REPRONIG) will conduct a workshop on reproduction rights, licensing, and royalty management on 19 June 2026.

Following the Ibadan programme, the training will move to Abuja on 26 and 27 June 2026 for participants from the North-Central zone and the Federal Capital Territory. Kano will host participants from the North-West and North-East regions on 2 and 3 July 2026, while Owerri will host chapters from the South-East on 8 and 9 July 2026.

The South-South regional workshop will take place in Port Harcourt on 10 and 11 July 2026.
The ANA President further disclosed that the regional workshops will be followed by a nationwide chapter-level step-down training scheduled for 25 July 2026.

This phase is intended to ensure that the knowledge acquired at the regional workshops is disseminated to members at the chapter level, thereby extending the impact of the programme to a wider audience of writers across the country.

Dr. Akanbi expressed appreciation to the Nigerian Copyright Commission and the Reproduction Rights Society of Nigeria for their partnership and support. He encouraged all participating chapter leaders and members to take full advantage of the training opportunities, emphasizing that a better understanding of copyright, reproduction rights, and royalties administration is essential for protecting authors’ interests and promoting the growth and sustainability of Nigeria’s literary sector.
